Ok, so I guess I’m not ‘actually’ a freelancer anymore. But her at Burns Creative we do work on all the same projects. Before I explain why we’re still as flexible as an agency as I was as a freelance designer let me first introduce myself. I’m Chris Burns, formerly a freelance web and graphic designer/developer now taking on the rather daunting role of Creative Director here at Burns Creative. A a freelancer, I specialised in creating beautiful, bespoke websites, graphics and illustrations for small businesses, charities and individuals. I also worked on corporate website development and mobile responsive website design. So what’s changed?
In essence, not a great deal. I’m still immensely passionate about the work I do, It’s just now I get to share this passion with an amazing tight-knit team.
Having dabbled in website design and development in my spare time throughout my younger years, I decided to take the plunge and head off to university. Initially completing a Bachelor of Arts in Business with Marketing then progressing to study towards a Masters in Multidisciplinary Design Innovation at Northumbria University.
It was during this time I was advised by a (lets say, less than competent) career advisor that “there’s no future in design, son”. I foolishly listened to this statement and for the next few years found myself chasing careers I just didn’t want.
I headed off eagerly into the working world finding employment in a number of positions including a Stag and Hen weekend planner, recruitment consultant, part of the ground crew for a local radio station and even as a delivery driver for a local florist.
After each foray into a new career I kept having the same gut feeling dragging me back to the world of design, spending all my free time designing and developing websites for friends and family.
In 2011, I decided enough was enough. After a chance meeting with an old friend, and at the mention of an opportunity to work as a full time designer/developer, I took the plunge. Fully aware of the dubious statement from my careers advisor years before.
It’s decision which has proved very successful, as eight and a bit years later I’m still here, doing what I love. I now work as a Creative Director here at Burns Creative for a huge range of clients, large and small… And as a bonus, we’re currently available to take on new projects.
Whilst I’m no longer a one man band, Our Agency is built around the same key principles I learned as a freelancer: –
